For standard small signage, I initially focused on brand consistency by using black backgrounds wherever possible, accompanied by the specific line colours for familiarity.

It’s time to start designing! I experimented with many concepts, particularly focusing on the issues of language accessibility, global perception, and standardising branding and designs such as route maps.

I tried to maintain as much of the original design as possible when working on horizontal on-train signage. I included both legacy icons and standard station blobs.

I created some ‘novel’ concepts, including directional signage for connections between lines to improve navigability, based on one of the key points from my research.

I focused on Priority Zero and Priority One insights given that the remainder were more large-scale, long-term, and in the field research-based. You can enjoy the full dynamic designs by hitting the button below!

Legacy iconography made more prominent, more dynamic information included, and unnecessary information removed.

Enhanced legacy colour scheme with linear gradient in addition to dynamic information throughout flow, feeder icons, full translation (for separate screen), and disruption and warning information where necessary.

Conduct an additional research study to obtain additional feedback on designs.
Visit Mexico City to conduct in the field research with passengers.
Revisit idea to incorporate a new ticket purchasing screen in addition to a routefinder at all stations, once I have a greater understanding of the new 2024 update.

‘Even though there are still a lot of educational and societal issues to resolve, I’m glad I can finally get to work and travel with my daughter without having to worry about safety issues!’

My CDMX Metro redesign project is now complete! Or is it? Of course not! I feel I have only scratched the surface, and in reality, the process would continue. Along with my ‘real-world’ and behavioural learnings highlighted earlier, below are some tangible next steps I could potentially pursue!
Review designs of feeder systems such as Metrobus, Cablebús, and new train to Santa Fe to determine feasibility of standardising design across all forms of transport.

Gain an understanding of the real-life time and cost of such a modernisation.
Build Figma capability in order to become competent in variables and tokens to understand ease of duplicating design across 12 lines.
Investigate methods of education in design to support non-Mexicans with legacy/heritage.
